Hello Skiers and Boarders,
What’s up with out weather? It is still snowing in the Sierra and it is May. We received 6 or 7 inches of snow overnight making it a powder morning at Alpine Meadows. The mountain was in a cloud all morning making the light flat. Opening was slightly delayed from 8 am to 8:45 am. A small crowd waited for the Summit Chair to open anticipating some good May powder. Unfortunately the area available for skiing was limited which destroyed the pristine snow fields quickly. Surface conditions were dense new snow that was about 6 to 8 inches deep. Turning was delightful when the space in front of me was free of tracks. We were able to seek out a few runs with reasonable areas of untracked snow after a couple of delightful rounds that were untouched. Snow this time of year condenses quickly and creates a rather fir surface. This happened today as skiers and boarders etched up the trails making for a rather bumpy ride on some slopes.
The sun has come out late this afternoon. Roads are dry and much of the snow that was hanging on trees this morning has disappeared. The end, however, is not in sight. More unsettled weather that includes snow showers or more serious snow fall is in the forecast beginning Saturday night. Winter does not seem to want to come to an end. The slopes are full. It looked like mid February this morning.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
