Winter Pack and Firm Snow

Hello Skiers and Boarders,

The extremely cold and gusty winds that howled over our ridge tops moderated today. This morning the ridge top winds dropped into the 40 mile per hour range. Summit Chair six pack was operating today, although the chairs were only filled with 4 people. Roundhouse had a mechanical problem and was not loading skiers today. There were a good number of skiers and boarders on the hill. Lines were a little long on Summit, but not bad. Other lifts had lines that seem to vary from somewhat long to nothing at all.

I found some good winter pack in the usual places. Gentian Gully where I was all by myself. Fall Line under Yellow Chair and Chicken Leg (far to the right of Yellow Trail). Terry’s Return and the areas below Palisades remain in winter condition. There is some firm snow to be found, especially in the Sherwood Area.

It was clear and remains only 14 degrees this afternoon at the top of Summit Chair.

A photo of cracked ice along the edge of the Truckee River between Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley is attached. It was cracked in a design that looked like a slate patio. I do not remember ever seeing ice in these shapes.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
