Hello Skiers and Boarders,
This afternoon the lifts at Alpine are closed. Lower lifts at Squaw remain open. This morning, amid drifting snow and high winds, Roundhouse was spinning. Depending on who you spoke with the skiing was either good, awesome or too much to take. Friends of mine were out making tracks over to Waterfall and under the Sherwood Cliffs this morning and raved about the skiing. Other friends took one run and felt lucky to make if back to the lodge and still another was out most of the morning reporting dense wind packed snow. It was a storm day.
I wandered out late and after three runs they shut down Roundhouse. Winds were whipping upslope from the south making it unpleasant to ski Rock Garden and Yellow Trails, but Sympathy and Werner’s Schuss were not bad as any winds were at your back. I found the skiing just fine. Wind pack surface with dense snow, but not difficult for me to ski. Visibility was poor, but not bad if I stayed near trees. During the short time I was out it just felt like a good old storm day. Snow was rather light this morning, but it has gathered speed this afternoon. If I calculated correctly, it appears 15 inches of snow has fallen last night at the base of Alpine. Temperature at the base this afternoon is 29 degrees. It is 25° at the top with winds gusting to 107 mile per hour. One photo taken riding up the lift today is attached.
