Best Corn of the Season

Hello Skiers and Riders,

What a crazy winter we have had this year.  After a warm week that saw me riding my bike in shorts, temperatures dropped into the 20’s last night.  Clouds even left a dusting of snow in the Truckee Area.  I was not very optimistic this morning as I considered heading for the mountain to take advantage of the last day or two for Alpine Meadows.  My thought was that the mountain would be solid ice after a night of below freezing temperatures.  To my surprise I found firm conditions on the north facing slopes and near perfect corn on the rest of the mountain.  The lack of skiing during the week created a relatively smooth surface that softened by 9:30 in many areas.  The beauty was that the overall temperature remained cool and sunshine did not bake the slopes quickly.  We skied really nice corn snow in Wolverine Bowl under Idiot’s Delight early.  Then we hit the High Traverse smiling down Sun Bowl.  South Face off the Sherwood lift fill the next few runs.  Expert Shortcut took us back to the base of Summit where we lapped Low Beaver a number of times.  Smooth corn above Kangaroo at noon?  I am sure the corn slopes lasted most of the day.  It is a pity that Alpine is being closed when the snow is so good.  At least it was today.

A cold night is predicted which means if may be good again tomorrow.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
