Spring Skiing at Squaw

Hello Skiers and Riders,

It is warm and sunny today.  Temperatures are running in the mid-sixties this afternoon.

The other day I gathered up my ski equipment just in case someone talked me into skiing at Squaw during the week.  Today we headed to Squaw because it was John G’s birthday which was a good excuse for me hit the slopes one more time this season.

We skied for a couple of hours enjoying the spring snow conditions.  Groomed runs were very smooth and not too soft.  Many offered a top layer of corn.  Skier packed off piste consisted of soft moguls that were easy to turn on and around.  Non-skier off piste was not good in many areas.  I call it decayed snow.  The type that eats your poles as they disappear deep into the soft sticky pack.  It is not easy snow for turning.  We made turns on Siberia, Shirley Lake, Granite Peak, Headwall, and KT22 during our morning tour of the mountain.

Some areas appear to have frozen lightly overnight and others need a good overnight freeze to firm them up.  The weekend does not look real promising.  Rain or snow Saturday and rain or snow Sunday.  It does not appear that it will be warm and sunny as it is today.

Attached are a few photos taken at Squaw this morning.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
