Clear Skies and Corn Snow

Hello Skiers and Riders,

The day started out overcast with flat light. I changed my goggle lens expecting a flat light day. By the time I walked out of the locker room the sky had cleared and there was not a cloud in site. It has been that way all day. Thin high clouds followed by blue sunny skies. Groomed runs were available all over the mountain this morning. They were smooth and well done. Our first run was a little firm, but after that the snow softened. Typical runs turned to smooth groomed corn by 10:30. I thought Yellow Trail was particularly nice corn. I was not out very long today so I cannot say what the off piste conditions were, but I will venture a guess that they were pretty good into the afternoon. Soft spring snow that is turning to corn in some areas. Overnight temperatures were cold enough to freeze the surface. Winds were not an issue this morning.

This coming weekend looks like it will be very interesting. It appears water will fall from the sky below 7000 feet, but it is possible that upper elevations will receive feet of snow. I guess we wait and see what happens. This is a storm coming out of the Pacific which normally bring high winds along with the precipitation. Of course that means the possibility of limited operations is again something to consider.

For those of you interested in the Truckee River, it is currently discharging from the lake in Tahoe City at 700+ cubic feet per second. The level of Tahoe today is 6,227.26 feet.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

Editor’s Note: Andy got the report right on today. The day started out a tiny bit firm, then the clouds rolled in, and then the afternoon was a cornucopia. The north facing, off-piste runs were not so great (we were a little “piste-d” off) the whole day.
