In Memory of My Mother

Hello Friends,

Blue skies covered our beautiful mountains this morning after dropping 7 inches of new snow overnight.  Warm air soon thickened the new blanket of snow, but morning turns were very special today.

Another great day of being unemployed. #iloveskiing #getitbeforeitcooks

I toured the mountain this morning in memory of my mother, Margrit Wertheim, who passed on yesterday afternoon.  My mother grew up in southern Germany and always loved the mountains.  Early in her life she hiked up snow covered fields to earn her turns (we call it backcountry skiing).  She had no choice.  Hike or don’t ski.  My mother loved skiing and hiking.  She hiked most of the trails in the Tahoe Region many times over and has been a long time supporter of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association.  We have many photos of flowers and panoramic views that she took over the years.  She was an amateur photographer and took many beautiful photos of nature as well as children.  She worked in San Francisco for a photographer for many years.  My mother installed a love of life and the mountains in both myself and my brother.  We grew up skiing and have never stopped.  My parents fell in love with Alpine Meadows before it was a ski area.  In 1963 our family constructed a second home in the Bear Creek Subdivision.  This eventually became my parents full time home.  Yesterday afternoon she quietly passed on in her Alpine Meadows home.  She was 94 years old.  Although she had not skied for a number of years, she still loved the snow that graces our mountains each winter.  My mother skied daily at Alpine Meadows for many years.  She was well known to all the employees and had many friends on the slopes.  She was the best mother her sons could have had, a wonderful wife to my father, Ernest Wertheim, and an inspirational grandmother to my son Brian.  She was also a great part time caretaker of my brother and sister-in-laws dogs.

She will be missed by many.  If anyone would like to share in her memory, please consider a donation to either the Tahoe Rim Trail or the Truckee Humane Society.  Below are links to their sites. A few pictures of the mountain and skiing today are attached.

  1. Vielen Dank fur Teilet. It’s very rare to have someone tell the full story of their parents and to honor them in memory by action. Let’s hope for another big pow day this April.
