Aging Skiers

Hello Skiers and Riders,

Another warm spring day has spread over the Sierra. I was out for a short period of time this morning enjoying softening groomed runs. The grooming was a little rough today with a few areas sporting open holes where corduroy should have been and some minor ridges between snowcat passes. The surface off piste was firm this morning while south facing slopes such as Sunspot were beginning to soften at 9. A friend skied Sun Bowl and thought it was pretty good, just not smoothed out enough from the day before. As the day progressed north facing slopes softened offering up some very good skiing.

Over the weekend, between appointments, I stayed off the mountain at Alpine. Instead I took a couple of hours and snowshoed in the Kyburz Flat area. This is located north of Truckee off Hwy. 89. I was alone on a beautiful sunny day walking along side a meandering creek flowing out of a large meadow. (Photos attached) This is a great place to view wildlife in the summer or view Native American Petroglyphs or mountain bike on dirt roads. On Sunday, which happen to be my birthday, we went out crosscountry skiing at Tahoe Donner. It was another gorgeous day. We skied into the Euer Valley on well groomed trails maintained by Tahoe Donner. If we calculated the distance correctly, then we skied about 10 miles.

Having not been on the hill at Alpine over the weekend I was surprised to find a couple of new signs. I figured they were meant for me or other perhaps other aging skiers. Is the company trying to tell us that there are older people skiing at Alpine then some other areas. You can see the photo I took of the sign located on the Dance Floor Trail. In big letters on a blue background it says, “REST AREA”. I guess the old skiing crowd at Alpine cannot make it all the way down the hill with out stopping to rest.

I have also attached a photo sent to me that shows the difference in snow depth for the years 2011, 2012 and this year at a sign on a tree. The sign points to Wolverine Bowl. On side of the photo shows the sign high on the tree which is the drought year. The other it is almost under snow and this year they were digging it out.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

Randy noted that today “was a great day. We skied until noon.”
