Hello Skiers and Riders,
Day 1 of the women’s World Cup at Squaw Valley is over. I heard it was pretty exciting.
The good news for Alpine skiers was that the resort was fairly empty today. There were no lines. The parking lot was not full. Skies were overcast all day. They cleared at 4 this afternoon. At 4:00 pm my car told me it was 52 degrees outside. With such warm temperatures one would assume the snow would have been slushy and deep in many places. However, that assumption would have been incorrect. I was busy all morning and did not get onto the hill until 2:00 pm. I found wonderful spring snow all over the mountain. Of course there were flat areas that were sticky, but most of the skier packed areas were really nice. The snow was very consistent where I skied. There were no starts and stops that tend to throw one forward.
My quick two hour tour of the mountain included North Peril, Palisades, Yellow Trail, Dance Floor, Charity, Werner’s Schuss, Mountain View, Scotty’s Beam, Reily’s Run, and Robin Hood. I was able to ride every major lift during my quick afternoon tour. Summit, Roundhouse, Alpine Bowl, Yellow Chair, Scott, Lakeview, and Sherwood because there were no lines. There is also a photo of the paved bike path that is cleared all winter in Squaw Valley. Yesterday afternoon I took a nice walk on the past from the Squaw Valley Fire Station to the Village. Longer daylight hours and the warm weather made it a very nice walk after work. In some area along the trail the snow banks are eight feet high.
It is sunny and warm and should continue that way into next week.
